Paclitaxel is a complex secondary metabolite extracted from the bark of Taxus taxus. It is also the only drug known to promote microtubule polymerization and stabilize polymerized microtubules. Isotope tracers showed that paclitaxel only binds to polymerized microtubules and does not react with unpolymerized tubulin dimers (see related literature)
