Alkyl trimethylammonium cationic surfactants are prepared by the reaction of higher aliphatic amines with chloromethane in the presence of sodium hydroxide. These surfactants are composed of one long-chain alkyl or alkyl group (typically 8 to 22 carbon atoms) and three short-chain alkyl groups (1 to 7 carbon atoms)
